Llandovery Town
LLANDOVERY
Situated on the western border of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Llandovery was described by the early travel writer George Borrow as 'the pleasantest little town in which I have halted’.
Llandovery is an ancient market and droving town, and has been home to a host of interesting historical characters. One of the most famous residents is Llywelynap Gruffydd, a statue of whom stands gleaming next door to the hill-top ruins of Llandovery Castle. The town plays host to many different festivals and events throughout the year (please see events page).
Llandovery Town offers the community and holidaymakers a full range of services and shops. With the tourist centre (located by the ancient castle) is where you can research the town and the local area. The town is served by Llandovery railway station, where there is a park and ride to Llanelli and Shrewsbury via the Heart of Wales Line. Llandovery — a corruption of Llanymddyfri, meaning Llan ymlith y dyfroedd ("Church enclosure amidst the waters") — owes its name to its position between the River Tywi and the Afon Brân just upstream of their confluence. A smaller watercourse, the Bawddwr, runs through and under the town.

Also in the town are a charity-run theatre (Llandovery Theatre), a heritage centre and Llandovery College. The tourist centre houses exhibitions on the Tonn Press, the area's droving history and the nineteenth-century geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, whose work in the area resulted in the assignment of the name "Llandovery" to rocks of a certain age across the entire world. The Llandovery Epoch is the earliest in the Silurian Period of geological time.
The town is also a great base for those whom have a variety of interests.
